little gods

A reminder that there is no one greater than YHWH

This world is full of little gods. Have you noticed? There’s the god of entertainment—the one who keeps you from thinking or contemplating the reality of your life. There’s the god of false identity who feeds your need to denounce the way in which God made you. There’s the god of work- there to distract you from those you love by feeding your pride in working nonstop. There’s also the god of money that keeps you unsatisfied and filled with discontent. These gods have one common goal: to keep you from giving your trust, time, talent, and treasure to the One True God, YHWH.

If you profess Jesus Christ as Lord of your life, all of these other gods only serve as a distraction for the prince of darkness. They give you a reason to feed your flesh instead of your spirit. And isn’t that exactly what the enemy wants? When you face adversity, it’s easy to numb your emotions by spending hours online. But God wants you to spend hours on your knees. When you are successful in life and have had great accomplishments, it’s so easy to take all the credit for yourself. But God wants the glory and praise in all that you do. When the world spins confusion around who you are, it’s easy to default and listen to the many voices. But God wants you to remember that your identity is in Jesus Christ.

When we read through the Old Testament, we see that the Israelites, even though God spoke to them and was with them through the desert, forgot God. They saw Him do multiple miracles, yet they still chose to give their trust, time, talents, and treasures to other gods. Throughout the Psalms and the Prophet books of the Bible, we read that God has to constantly remind them who He is and what He has done for them. While it is easy to look at the Israelites and judge them, we can look at ourselves today and find that we are no different. All one has to do is read through the Old Testament to know that from the time sin entered the world, mankind has been wild n’ out. Our nation, our world, has always been full of greed, lust, and all manner of debauchery and idolatry. We are no better and no worse than the Israelites. And while humankind has been and will always be a mess, YHWH was, is, and will always be the same God.

The hope of humankind rests in God’s son, Jesus Christ. The sacrifice of Jesus not only reconciles each believer to our holy God but also provides us with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Because of this indwelling, we have access to love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control (Gal. 5: 22-23).

The Holy Spirit keeps us from giving our trust, time, talent, and treasure to little gods. In John 14:26, Jesus said to the disciples, “…the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” Do you need a reminder of who God is? There’s no need to search the internet. Ask the Spirit.

Facing adversity is hard, but you won’t find peace through an ungodly relationship or scrolling on TikTok. Call on the Spirit. Romans 8:26-27 says, “…the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

Instead of meditating on the voices of the world who lie to you continually, incline your ear to the voice of truth. In John 16:13, Jesus said, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” You can rely on the Spirit to remind you of what God said in His Word. Speaking of His Word, the Spirit will never contradict God’s Word. So, if you want to know God, read His Word and ask the Spirit to bring to your remembrance what God revealed in His Word.

Little gods are real. They are any person or thing that you put before God. But I am here to remind you, as the Spirit has reminded me, that there is nothing and no one greater than YHWH. Here are some of my favorite names for our God.

He is The Great I AM, the One who was, is, and always will be. He is in a category all His own, on His own, because He just IS.

He is Jehovah Jirah, my provider.

He is Jehovah Rapha, my healer.

He is Jehovah Shalom, my peace.

He is El Roi, the one who sees me.

He is my Adonai, my Lord.

He is Yeshua/Joshua/Jesus, my Savior.

YHWH is a caring, loving Father, Abba.
