Listening to Clint Smith share word pictures tied to slavery is like sipping a very hot drink. You must slowly savor the beauty of his words to endure the harsh realities of this history. If you consume quick gulps, you’ll be left doubled-over and overwhelmed. This isn’t a book you can chug in one swallow. It’s rich and heart-wrenching. You gotta take your time with this one.
I chose this as an audiobook by chance. You know how you get that one precious token with Audible and scan through the app in search of something worth listening to? I’m glad I chose How the Word Is Passed. While it was hard to recollect the cruelties of slavery, this book helps America get to the root of the slave trade. I know he didn’t ask for it, but here’s an alternative title, Slavery Exposed. Smith cuts no corners, and doesn’t tiptoe, or walk on eggshells, yet his meticulously poetic descriptions and his impeccable recollection of conversations slowly reveal the dark secrets of the past with poise.
